Driving with an Expired MOT

Driving without a valid MOT is illegal, except when travelling to a pre-booked test. Offenders risk a £1,000 fine and potentially invalid insurance, and you cannot tax a vehicle without a up-to-date MOT. If your car fails its MOT and is classed as dangerous, driving it could result in a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points.

What is an MOT test? An MOT test is an annual inspection required for most vehicles over 3 years old to ensure they meet road safety and environmental standards.

Every 12 months after the first MOT.

  • Checks include:
  • Lights
  • Brakes
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Bodywork
  • Suspension and steering
  • Exhaust & emissions
  • Windscreen & wipers
  • Seatbelts
  • Horn

No documents are needed - your details are checked online. Bring your V5C logbook only if there are issues or changes.

No, you can’t drive without an MOT. Driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine up to £1,000.

If your old MOT is still valid, you can drive it unless the fault is “dangerous.” If your MOT is expired and it fails, you can only drive to a pre-booked repair or MOT appointment.

Once your vehicle reaches three years of age, it is a legal requirement that it must undergo an MOT test annually. The MOT test will ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and meets all DVSA standards. Some vehicles, such as taxis and ambulances, need to be re-tested annually after the vehicle is 12 months old.

It is important to bear in mind that an MOT test will not look at the mechanical condition of your vehicle and you should have your car serviced regularly. If you aren't sure when your vehicle is due for an MOT test, you can check the status.

MOT testing takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete. The Tyre Group has many test centres, so you can pick a location and time convenient to you.
